BEAR 100 COURSE DIRECTIONS Start to checkpoint #1, Maple Creek (9) The race starts at the tall pole by Deer Cliff Inn in Cub River Canyon. You go up to the main road going up the canyon. In 2/3 of a mile you will cross a cattle guard. At 8/10 of a mile you make a right turn into a campground, then you go left. At a little over a mile you see the Juniper Trail sign as you head up the trail. It starts by the Cub River on your left, then cuts back to the right and climbs up, angling up and over a ridge. From then on it is mostly a rolling, up and down and around, sometimes vague trail through meadows. At 3.6 miles you come to a fence. Go left, along the fence. In another 50 yards or so, you come to a gate on the right. Go through the gate, leaving it the way you found it. Shortly you will cross a stream bed, probably dry, and turn right, heading down and around the next little hill. At 4 3/4 miles you come to a big meadow where you need to make a sharp left turn, following rock cairns and ribbons (on race day) up through the meadow. At the top end you come to a good trail that takes you up and over the next hill. As you come down the other side you come to a fence at 5.3 miles. Go through the gate, which should be open. Shortly after that, you come to a good 4-wheeler trail by a pond. Go right, then take a quick left at the "trail" sign, crossing the creek. In a quarter of a mile you come to a mudhole, then you pass through a couple of small meadows, swing around and cross a dry creek bottom, then you climb up through some maple trees. At a little over 7 miles you come to a bare ridge. You go left up the ridge for 1/3 of a mile, then you pass through a gate on the right. You double back on the other side of the fence and drop down by a salt lick for cattle, angling back down to the left. At nearly the 8 mile mark you make a sharp right turn, following rock cairns and ribbons (on race day) down the canyon for nearly half a mile, then you cross the creek and come to the Maple Creek Trail sign. At this point it will be marked with ribbons both ways, but we will have a person directing you down the canyon 1/2 mile to the aid station. Aid Station #1, Maple Creek (9) to Aid Station #2, Franklin Basin (16.4) Head back up the trail. In 1/2 mile you pass the Maple Creek Trail sign where you came down. Don’t go left onto the trail. Stay strait on the trail to the right of the creek. It has been washed out in places, but there is a cattle trail off to the right for most of the way. At 1.35 miles you come to a gate. Go through, leaving it the way you found it. At 1.9 miles there is a stream crossing. It will be flagged to go to the right, where you can cross on logs. Shortly after the crossing you come to a sign. Turn right, going up Maple Creek (literally at times). You cross the creek, then the faint trail goes up through a meadow, then up into the trees. Then it drops down past a camping spot to the creek not far from Maple Creek Spring (50 yards to the right). At 2.57 miles you cross the creek on a log, climbing up the steep bank on the opposite side. At 3.38 miles a trail cuts to the left. Stay straight, but shortly, at 3.41 miles you come to a trail split. Take a sharp left turn, past the patch of stinging nettle. As you begin to climb, you come to another split. Take a sharp right turn at 3.46 miles. In 1/10 of a mile a trail comes in from the left. Keep going straight, as you climb higher and higher. At 4.86 miles from AS #1 your long uphill climb is over, as you reach the crest, and head down into Franklin Basin. After 2.4 miles of downhill you cross a creek and come to the Franklin Basin Aid Station. (7.4 miles from AS#1) Aid Station #2, Franklin Basin (16.4) to Aid Station #3, Danish Pass (20) Head north on Franklin Basin Road for 1.1 miles. Turn right onto a dirt road. At 1.9 miles the road splits. Go right. The road climbs up to Danish Pass (3.6 miles from AS#2). Aid Station #3, Danish Pass (20) to Aid Station #4, Beaver Creek (28.09) Head south on the highline trail, just east of the fence. In a little over 4 miles you take a left heading downhill. In 2/3 of a mile a trail takes off to the right. Stay straight on the main trail that curves to the left and swings around the north end of Gibson Basin. You come to a crossroads. Head southeast on the trail (not a dirt road) that goes up into the trees, takes you up over the hill, and swings down for nearly 3 miles to Beaver Creek, and the next aid station, just across the creek. (8.09 miles from AS #3) Aid Station #4, Beaver Creek (28.09) to Aid Station #5, Fish Haven Road (32.37) Cross the road and head east on the jeep trail that swings east and north, crossing a cattle guard 2.5 miles later, then skirting another huge meadow, and shortly after re-entering the trees, you come to a better road and Aid Station #6 (4.28 miles from AS #4). Aid Station #5, Fish Haven Road (32.37) to Aid Station #6, Danish Pass #2 (38.87) Turn left onto the road that goes to Fish Haven, heading west. In less than 1/4 of a mile you come to a fork in the road. Go right. In about a mile you take a right turn as the main trail cuts down to the left. You stay high on the ridge. In 1.75 miles you come to a trail sign. Among other things it says "Egan Basin 2 miles". In a little over a mile a sign says "Egan Basin 1.5". Go left. In 3/10 of a mile you make a sharp left turn. In a little over 1.5 miles you come to a dirt road. Go right. Shortly you come to the main road in Egan Basin. Turn right, heading north, up the road to the aid station 1.7 miles later (6.5 miles from AS #5) Aid Station #6, Danish Pass #2 (39) to Aid Station #7, Bloomington (44.4) Head north on the highline trail. In 8/10 of a mile you come to a sign. It says "Bloomington Lake Trail 4". After 3 1/2 miles you will be able to look down on your left and see Willow Flat. At 4 1/2 miles you come to a big rock sign. It says (among other things), "2 to Bloomington Lake". In a little over half a mile there is a trail split. The main trial drops down to the right. Shortly thereafter there is a sign that says "1 mile to Bloomington Lake". Go right. In less than 1/2 mile you come to Aid Station #7 (5.4 miles from AS #6) Aid Station #7, Bloomington (44.4) to Aid Station #8, Paris Canyon (50.1) Head back up the trail to the sign that says "Paris Canyon 4". Go right on this trail, heading north. In a little aver 3 miles you will be able to look down and see Hull Valley on your left. In another 1.75 miles a trail takes off to the right. Stay straight. In less than a mile you come to the aid station at the top of Paris Canyon (5.72 miles from AS #7). Aid Station #8, Paris Canyon (50.13) to Aid Station #9, Dry Basin (57.85) Head north on the Highline Trail. In 2/3 of a mile the trail splits. Go left, uphill. In another half mile there is a trial split. Go right. In a couple miles you come to a better trail. Go left. (looking back a sign says "trail", with an arrow pointing to the right). Shortly a road veers right. Stay left. Then you come to a Highline Trail sign. Stay on the Highline Trail. In a little over a mile a 4-wheeler trail comes in from the right. Keep straight. In another mile plus you come to a sign "Dry Basin Trail 354". Don’t go right! Stay straight (left). In 2.4 miles you come to the Dry Basin Aid Station (7.72 miles from AS #8). Aid Station #9, Dry Basin (57.85) to Aid Station #10, Danish Flat (66.2) Leaving the Highline Trail, you head south on a dirt road. In 2/3 of a mile the road splits. Go left. In a little over a mile you leave the dirt road, taking a very sharp left turn onto a trail that cuts back to the northeast, going uphill (it looks like it used to be a logging road that they have blocked off). In about a half mile you reach Green Pass, Going down the other side you will pass a spring on the left. It is basically a mudhole. I wouldn’t drink from it. About 2/3 of a mile farther you come to a sign that says "Green Pass spring 1/2 mile", if it’s still there. A little less than a mile farther down the trail you come to a sign, "Dry Fork, Mill Canyon 2, Green Pass 2". Continue down the canyon. Stay on the main trail. At the Dry Fork sign go right and 3/10 of a mile farther you reach the Mill Canyon road. There will be a chair set up here with water and a sports drink. Turn left, heading down the road, which soon climbs up and around a ridge and drops down to Danish Flat. Turn left at the Danish Flat sign and shortly you come to the aid station on the left. (8.35 miles from AS #9). Aid Station #10, Danish Flat (66.2) to Aid Station #11, Copenhagen Basin Road (74.27) Head north on the dirt road. In about 2 miles you come to a sign that says "Danish Flat 2 miles, Liberty Creek", with an arrow. Continue another half mile, taking a left at the trail split just before the creek. Soon you will cross Liberty Creek. This is a tough section with lots of steep up and down. Continue north on the trail, uphill. (don’t go up or down the canyon) In less than a mile you cross 3 tiny creeks (if there is still water running there in Sept.). 2/3 of a mile farther you come to a fence. Go through the gate which should be open. In 1/4 of a mile later a road comes up from the right. Stay on the trail. In about a mile you come to a sign, "Emigration Creek 1 1/2". The trail splits here. Go left. You head up and over the hill, then drop down toward Emigration Creek. 1/4 of a mile before the creek you come to a warning sign. There is an archery range here. Don’t worry, I don’t think anybody will be practicing this late in the year, especially at night, when most of you will be passing through here. After you cross the creek, go to the right, down the dirt road. In 2/10 of a mile you come to a paved road. Go left, up the road. 1/4 of a mile up you pass the entrance to Emigration Campground. 1/4 of a mile later, at the big bend in the road, the Highline Trail crosses. Go left onto the Highline Trail. The trail cuts back next to the campground and in a mile you come to the big parking area next to the Copenhagen Basin Road turnoff and Aid Station #11 at mile 74.27. (8.07 miles from AS #10).Aid Station #11, Copenhagen Basin Road (74.27) to Aid Station #12, Copenhagen Basin (78.27) Head south on Copenhagen Basin Road. (dirt road) In 3.6 miles you come to a trail going off to the left as the road curves to the right. Stay on the road. It drops down to Copenhagen Basin. There will be an aid station here. (4 miles from AS #11). Aid Station #12, Copenhagen Basin (78.27) to Aid Station #13, Dry Basin #2 (82.39) Continue south on the road (jeep trail). In a little over 2 miles you come to a sign "Copenhagen Basin 2 1/2, HWY 36 6, Emigration CG 7". Shortly the road curves to the right and the Highline Trail continues straight. Go straight onto the Highline Trail. In a little over a mile you come to a sign, "Copenhagen Basin Road 1". The trail splits. Go left here. In a little over half mile you come to the Dry Basin Aid Station (4.12 miles from AS #12). Aid Station #13, Dry Basin #2 (82.39) to Aid Station #14, Paris Canyon #2 (90.1) Continue on the Highline Trail, heading southwest. This should look familiar. This 7.7 mile section is a repeat from earlier, only in the opposite direction. In 2.4 miles you come to the Dry Basin Trail sign. Continue straight. In a little over a mile a trail comes up from the left. It is more defined than the Highline Trail, which continues straight. Dont go left! Stay straight. Less than a mile after that you pass a Highline Trail sign, where you cross a road. In about 1/4 of a mile you come to the "trail" sign where you turn right. In 2 1/3 miles you drop down to a wider trail. Go right, and in a little over half a mile you are at the Paris Canyon Aid Station (7.72 miles from Dry Basin AS # 13) Aid Station #14, Paris Canyon (90.1) to Aid Station #15, German Dugway (93) Head west on the dirt road that takes you up over the mountain and down a narrow, steep, winding road called the German Dugway. 2 2/3 miles down this road you come to a better dirt road. Turn left, downhill. This is the German Dugway aid station at mile 93. Aid Station #15, German Dugway (93) to the finish (100) Note! The next two miles are rugged and NOT ON A MAINTAINED TRAIL. It is strongly recommended you scout this portion of the course before race day. Use caution and pace yourself to cover this stretch in more time than you might feel is necessary! From German Dugway Aid Station you take a trail (Do not head down the dirt road). There is an ATV trail that heads down just to the right of the dirt road.Take it for about 10 yards, then look for a faint trail to the right. Take this trail in a southeasterly direction. This trail has many little ups and downs as it traverses the mountain for a mile and a half. In many places it is very narrow and steep, and you have to climb over rocks in a couple of spots. You come to a little pass where a cow trail takes you down the other side of the ridge to Worm Basin. You will come to a flat area with sagebrush, and the cow trail will take you past some deep holes in the ground just before you come to a dirt road. Take a left onto the dirt road, and in a short distance you come to a grassy area. Look for a trail that takes off to the right and heads down on the north side of the little mountain range. You continue on this trail for a couple of miles, then make a sharp left turn onto a cow trail (if you come to a spot where the trail curves to the right and you see a road coming into it from the left, you went too far). Go Down the cow trail to the main road, go right 8/10 of a mile and you are there. Congratulations, you survived the BEAR!
